오늘 공연을 해주실 합창단, 오케스트라 여러분,
그리고 내외 귀빈 여러분,
This year, we mark the 70th anniversary of many historic events. For the world, the end of the Second World War and the founding of the United Nations; and for Koreans, the liberation and the division of the Korean peninsula.
금년은 70주년을 맞는 역사적 기념일이 많은 한 해입니다. 전세계적으로는 제2차 세계대전 종전과 유엔 창설 70주년, 한국에게는 광복 70주년과 분단 70년이 되는 해입니다.
And for decades, this place – Imjingak – was an abiding symbol of division and confrontation.
이 곳 임진각은 지난 수십 년간 분단과 대립의 오랜 상징이었습니다.
But ten years ago, this site had a new birth.
그러나 10년 전 이 곳은 다시 태어났습니다.
Now, I am proud to say that it has become an emblem for harmony, co-existence and peace.
이제 이 곳 임진각은 화합과 상생, 평화의 상징이 되었다고 말씀드릴 수 있습니다.
Even the name of this park – pyeonghwa, meaning peace; and nuri, meaning world – embodies our deep longing for a peaceful world.
영어로 peace, 즉‘평화’와 세계(world)를 뜻하는 우리말‘누리’가 합쳐져서 만들어진 이 공원의 이름 역시 평화로운 세계를 꿈꾸는 우리들의 깊은 염원을 상징합니다.
So, without doubt, this is the perfect setting for today’s Peace Concert, with outstanding choruses, ensembles and orchestras.
이런 점에서 여기 임진각 평화누리공원은 훌륭한 합창단, 앙상블, 오케스트라들과 함께 하는 오늘 평화공연을 위한 최적의 장소라고 확신합니다.
I would like to thank the diplomatic community in Korea, including the Diplomats’ Choir, the organizers, performers and everyone here today for this wonderful festival of harmony.
오늘 이 멋진 화합의 축제를 위해 애써 주신 주한 외교단 합창단을 비롯한 외교단 여러분, 주최측 관계자, 연주자 그리고 이 자리에 참석해 주신 모든 분들께 깊은 감사의 말씀을 전합니다.
Indeed, as the universal language, music has a transcendental power.
실로 음악은 만국 공용어로서 시대를 초월하는 무한한 힘을 갖고 있습니다.
It has been the instrument of peace, cross-cultural understanding and solidarity, across ages and regions.
나이와 종교를 뛰어넘는 평화의 도구이자 문화의 장벽을 넘어서는 이해와 연대의 도구로 기능해 왔습니다.
In Europe, a century ago, carol singing led to the famous Christmas truce, a moment of peace and harmony amid the violence of war.
100여 년 전 유럽에서는 격렬한 전쟁 속에서도 캐롤송이 평화와 화합의 순간을 이끌어 낸, 그 유명한‘크리스마스 휴전(Christmas Truce)’에 관한 에피소드가 있습니다.
In East Asia, over two millennia ago, a widely known story tells how the sound of hometown songs led soldiers to lay down their weapons and end the battle.
동양에서는 고향을 그리는 구슬픈 노래가 병사들로 하여금 무기를 내려놓게 하고 결국 전쟁을 끝내게 했다는 2천년도 더 된 유명한 이야기가 전해 내려오고 있습니다.
However, in many places around the world, we face harsh realities.
그러나, 오늘날 우리는 세계 도처에서 가혹한 현실을 직면하고 있습니다.
Here, on the Korean peninsula, we have the world’s longest armistice – not a real peace, but a semblance of peace.
이곳 한반도는 진정한 평화가 아닌 외관상의 평화(semblance of peace) 속에서, 세계에서 가장 오래된 정전체제가 지속되고 있습니다.
In Ukraine, in the Middle East, and in the geopolitical flashpoints in the South China Sea, we see not enduring peace, but fragile peace; not harmony, but dissonance.
우크라이나, 중동뿐 아니라 남중국해의 지정학적 위기지역들에서 영속적인 평화가 아닌, 깨지기 쉬운 평화를, 그리고 조화가 아닌 불협화음을 목도하고 있습니다.
So, how do we heal such dissension and discord?
그렇다면, 우리는 어떻게 이러한 불협화음과 부조화를 치유할 수 있을까요?
Well, I think the spirit of music might be the closest thing we have to a magical elixir.
저는 음악의 정신이야말로 우리가 가질 수 있는 마법의 묘약에 가장 가까운 것이라고 봅니다.
Members of an orchestra or a choir trust and depend on each other to create harmony.
오케스트라나 합창단의 단원들은 아름다운 화음을 만들어 내기 위해 서로를 믿고 의지합니다.
Whether it’s a duet, a trio, a quartet, or even a symphony, they come together to make a melodious whole that is more than just the sum of its parts.
음악이 2중주, 3중주, 4중주 심지어 교향곡이건 간에 연주자들은 함께 모여서 부분의 단순한 총합 이상의 감미로운 전체를 만들어 냅니다.
In that sense, such spirit of music is in tune with my government’s signature foreign policy of Trustpolitik, to build trust, consolidate peace and increase regional cooperation.
이러한 의미에서, 음악의 정신은 신뢰를 구축하고 평화를 공고히 하며 지역협력을 증진시키기 위한 우리 정부의 외교기조인 신뢰외교와도 일맥상통합니다.
Like I said back in January at the Davos Forum and just last week at the OSCE Asian Conference, ending the division, which is the legacy of the Korean War, will be a stabilizer and peace promoter for this region; a growth booster for the world; and a catalyst for connecting the Eurasian continent.
제가 지난 1월 다보스 포럼에서, 그리고 바로 지난 주 서울에서 열린 OSCE-아시아 회의에서 말씀드린 것처럼, 한국전쟁의 잔재인 분단의 종식은 지역 안정과 평화를 촉진하고, 세계의 경제성장을 견인하며, 유라시아 대륙을 연결하는 촉매가 될 것입니다.
And next month, the Eurasia Friendship Express will cross the continent, from Seoul via Vladivostok to Berlin.
다음달, 유라시아 친선특급이 서울에서 블라디보스톡을 거쳐 베를린까지 유라시아 대륙을 가로지르는 여정을 떠나게 됩니다.
Unfortunately, this time the Express will not be able to pass through North Korea, which remains Eurasia’s missing link.
안타깝게도 유라시아 대륙의 유일한 단절고리로 남아 있는 북녘 땅을 이번에는 통과하지 못할 것입니다.
But I am confident that one day, the Express will journey across the entire span of the Eurasian continent, without barbed wires or barriers.
그러나, 저는 언젠가 친선특급이 철조망과 장벽의 막힘 없이 유라시아 대륙의 전구간을 달리는 날이 올 것이라 확신합니다.
Ladies and gentlemen,
내외 귀빈 여러분,
The UNESCO charter eloquently states that, quote, “since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defenses of peace must be constructed,” unquote.
유네스코 헌장 서문에는“전쟁은 인간의 마음에서 생기는 것이므로, 평화의 방벽을 세워야 할 곳도 인간의 마음이다(since wars begin in minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defences of peace must be constructed).”라는 말이 있습니다.
This year, as we remember the 70th anniversary of the end of the War and of our division, that message has a special resonance in our hearts.
종전 70주년과 분단 70년을 맞는 올해, 이 말은 우리 가슴에 더욱 특별한 울림으로 다가옵니다.
And today, this concert is our message, our voice for peace.
오늘 공연은 평화를 향한 우리의 메시지, 그리고 우리의 목소리입니다.
So, may these hopes for peace in harmony touch the hearts and minds of all in North Korea and the world.
화합 속의 평화(peace in harmony)를 향한 우리의 염원이 북녘 땅과 전세계 사람들의 가슴과 마음 구석구석까지 울려 퍼지길 기원합니다.
