[원인, 이유 표시의 전치사]

*for: 행위나 상/벌의 이유

They were criticized for not taking the problem seriously.

그들은 그 문제를 진지하게 여기지 않은 것으로 비난받았다.

[blame, criticize, praise, thank, compliment, sorry, grateful, thankful]

for + ~ing는 '원인, '결과'를 나타낸다.

We are grateful to you for helping us out.

우리를 도와주셔서 고맙습니다.

He was sent to the prison for stealing.

그는 절도 때문에 교도소에 보내졌다.

for + ~ing가 '목적'의 의미일 때, 그 형태는 '명사'로 나오며 주어는 사물이다.

An altimeter is used for measuring height above sea level.

고도계는 해발 높이를 측정하는 데 사용된다.

We use altimeters to measure height above sea level.

우린 해발 높이를 측정할 때 고도계를 쓴다.

'~하기 위해서'로 해석할 경우, 사람이 주어이며 to 부정사를 쓴다.

*with: (추위, 두려움, 배고픔 등) 외부에서 육체에 미치는 원인에 사용

He was flushed with excitement. [cold, fever, hunger, excitement, shiver]

*at: at + 감정 동사/형용사 = ~을 보고 ~하다

She was glad/angry/terrified/ at the news.

그녀는 그 소식을 듣고 기뻤다/화났다/무서웠다.
